What Is Laughing Gas?
This form of sedation is our preferred method at Innova Family Dental. Laughing gas, also known as "minimal inhalation sedation" utilizes a special, comfortable nose mask and a steady flow of sedation. During your treatment, you’ll simply relax and breathe through the nose mask. The gas will reach your lungs and when it takes effect, you will feel calm and comfortable. Whether you’re anxious about coming to the dentist, afraid of numbing needles, or just want to relax during your procedure, laughing gas is an ideal option.
The Effects Of Laughing Gas
This form of sedation has a number of different effects. It is an analgesic (pain reliever), so it helps reduce any sensations of pain, pressure, and discomfort that you may feel during your dental work. It also produces a sense of mild euphoria. You will feel happy and comfortable, and may even giggle or laugh during your appointment. It is also common to feel somewhat disconnected from your body.
Fortunately, these effects won't last very long after your treatment has been completed. Once the procedure is complete and the mask has been removed, the effects of laughing gas wear off after about 5 minutes. You may feel some side effects like a headache or a stomachache, or mild dizziness. These side effects will wear off after just a few minutes and are typically very minor.
Sedation helps you stay comfortable throughout a wide variety of dental procedures. From routine cleanings to more extensive treatments, sedation guarantees that you will feel more calm and comfortable, and it makes it easier to stay still for longer procedures. Laughing gas wears off very quickly and has few side effects. More powerful forms of sedation may last 4-6 hours or longer, interfering with your ability to get back to your daily routine. In contrast, laughing gas wears off after just a few minutes. You can even drive yourself home or go back to work after treatment!
How Sedation Dentistry Helps Dental Anxiety
Most people who are nervous about the dentist have a few specific “triggers” that make them feel uncomfortable. Luckily, sedation dentistry can help with a wide variety of dental anxiety triggers.
For example, if you’re scared of the dentist because you don’t like numbing needles, laughing gas can help by making you feel more disconnected from what’s around you, while minimizing the discomfort of a numbing injection.
Even so, laughing gas also does not cause you to fall asleep. You will be completely conscious and responsive to commands, so this is a great option if you don’t like the idea of not being in control or not being aware of what’s happening during your procedure.
Is Comfort Dentistry Safe?
Sedation dentistry with laughing gas is very safe. There are only a few conditions, like COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) that may rule you out as a candidate for sedation with laughing gas. For the most part, any person who is healthy and does not have respiratory issues can be sedated with laughing gas.
There are no serious or life-threatening side effects associated with the use of laughing gas. In most cases, this form of dental sedation wears off within about 5 minutes after the treatment has ended, so you will recover very quickly. You can drive yourself home and get back to your day-to-day routine right away, or even go back to work. This makes sedation with nitrous oxide the most convenient way to relax in the dentist’s chair.
When Is Comfort Dentistry Offered?
Most commonly, sedation dentistry is used for procedures that involve removing some of your tooth material, or for oral surgeries. For example, sedation may be recommended if you’re having your tooth trimmed for a crown, or if you’re getting your wisdom teeth removed. Along with numbing, sedation ensures you’ll feel completely comfortable throughout your procedure.
That being said, we can provide sedation as part of any dental appointment upon request. If you are very anxious about seeing the dentist, for example, we can provide you with laughing gas during a routine six-month oral exam and teeth cleaning. This ensures you can get the dental care you need without fear or discomfort.
