What to Expect
Your Child’s First Visit
The details of your child’s first visit will depend on your child’s age and whether they have any permanent teeth. If you have an infant or very young toddler (1-2 years of age), you will be able to hold them on your lap as Dr. Kandimalla examines their mouth. Dr. Kandimalla will check each tooth that has erupted and clean them gently. Then, she will discuss your child’s oral health with you, and answer any questions you may have about caring for your child’s mouth as their teeth continue to erupt.
If your child is older (about 3) and has most or all of their primary (baby) teeth, their oral exam and cleaning will be very similar to the cleaning provided for adult patients. One of our hygienists will remove plaque and tartar from their teeth, brush and polish their teeth, and floss them to remove all debris from their mouth. Then, Dr. Kandimalla will perform a comprehensive oral exam. We may also recommend x-rays if we deem them to be necessary, and if you approve.
Early Oral Care
When Should I Bring My Child to the Dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that you take your child in for their first dental appointment when their first tooth comes out, or when they turn one year old (whichever comes first). We offer gentle, friendly dental care for children of all ages, and our team goes above and beyond to make sure your child’s first visit to our office is fun and stress-free.
Keep Little Smiles Healthy
Fluoride treatments are the best way to keep your child’s teeth healthy if they are prone to cavities and tooth decay. By applying a fluoride-rich solution to your child’s teeth after their cleaning, Dr. Kandimalla can strengthen tooth enamel and help reverse the effects of oral bacteria and acid. Fluoride can remineralize teeth that have been damaged by the first stages of decay and keeps your child’s teeth healthy.
Prevent Tooth Decay
Dental sealants are very useful for protecting your child’s teeth from cavities. They consist of a clear, liquid dental resin which is applied directly to your child’s rear teeth. Then, the resin is hardened using a UV light until it forms a strong protective layer to prevent decay-causing bacteria, acid, and food particles from directly contacting tooth enamel. In turn, this prevents cavities from forming. Sealants can last up to 10 years and this preventive treatment provides long-lasting protection.
