How it Works
Treatment with Laughing Gas
This form of sedation is our preferred method at Innova Family Dental. Laughing gas is also sometimes called “minimal inhaled sedation.” The treatment utilizes a special, comfortable nose mask and a steady flow of sedation that is inhaled through the mask. During your treatment, you’ll simply relax and breathe through the nose mask. The gas will reach your lungs and when it takes effect, you will feel calm and comfortable. Whether you’re anxious about coming to the dentist, afraid of numbing needles, or just want to relax during your procedure, laughing gas is an ideal option.
How it Feels
The Effects of Laughing Gas
Nitrous oxide has a number of different effects. It is an analgesic (pain reliever), so it helps reduce any sensations of pain, pressure, and discomfort that you may feel during your dental work. It also produces a sense of mild euphoria. You will feel happy and comfortable, and may even giggle or laugh during your appointment. It is also common to feel somewhat disconnected from your body.
These effects do not last very long after your treatment has been completed. When we take off your nose mask after your procedure is complete, the effects of laughing gas wear off after about 5 minutes. You may feel some side effects like a headache or a stomachache, or mild dizziness. These side effects will wear off after just a few minutes, and they are very minor.
How it Helps
Benefits of Laughing Gas
Sedation helps you stay comfortable throughout a wide variety of dental procedures. From routine cleanings to more extensive treatments, sedation guarantees that you will feel more calm and comfortable, and it makes it easier to stay still for longer procedures. Laughing gas wears off very quickly and has few side effects. More powerful forms of sedation may last 4-6 hours or longer, interfering with your ability to get back to your daily routine. In contrast, laughing gas wears off after just a few minutes and you can drive yourself home or even go back to work after treatment.
How can sedation dentistry help
with my dental anxiety?
Most people who are nervous about the dentist have a few specific “triggers” that make them feel nervous or uncomfortable, and sedation dentistry can help with a wide variety of dental anxiety triggers.
For example, if you’re scared of the dentist because you don’t like numbing needles, sedation dentistry can help by making you feel more disconnected from what’s around you, and minimizing the discomfort of a numbing injection.
In addition, sedation helps you feel more comfortable and safe overall. When you’re sedated with nitrous oxide, you won’t feel any pain or discomfort, and you will feel much less anxious about what’s happening during your appointment.
However, nitrous oxide also does not cause you to fall asleep. You will be completely conscious and responsive to commands, so this is a great option if you don’t like the idea of not being in control or not being aware of what’s happening during your procedure.
For all of these reasons and many more, sedation dentistry from Dr. Kalpana Kandimalla is a great option if you’re interested in getting dental care in Bolingbrook, but you’re nervous about seeing the dentist or have dental anxiety. We’re always here to help, so feel free to contact us to schedule a consultation with Dr. Kandimalla right away.
Is sedation dentistry safe?
what you need to know
Sedation dentistry with laughing gas is very safe. There are only a few conditions, like COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) that may rule you out as a candidate for sedation with laughing gas. For the most part, any person who is healthy and does not have respiratory issues can be sedated with laughing gas.
There are no serious or life-threatening side effects associated with the use of nitrous oxide at all. You may feel a bit confused, nauseated, or “foggy” after treatment, or have a minor headache. In rare cases, you may shiver or throw up, but this is very uncommon.
In most cases, sedation with nitrous oxide wears off within about 5 minutes after treatment is discontinued, so you will recover very quickly. You can drive yourself home and get back to your day-to-day routine right away, or even go back to work. This makes sedation with nitrous oxide the most convenient way to relax in the dentist’s chair.
what procedures can
sedation dentistry be used for?
Most commonly, sedation dentistry is used for procedures that involve removing some of your tooth material, or for oral surgeries. For example, sedation may be recommended if you’re having your tooth trimmed for a crown, or if you’re getting a dental implant in Bolingbrook. Along with numbing, sedation ensures you’ll feel completely comfortable throughout your procedure.
However, we can provide sedation as part of any dental appointment upon request. If you are very anxious about seeing the dentist, for example, we can provide you with nitrous oxide sedation during a routine six-month oral exam and teeth cleaning. This ensures you can get the dental care you need without fear or discomfort.
